“View-Self” - Exploring Cultural Identity, is the theme for an international virtual artist residency at Nexus Artspace in collaboration with i.e. Art Projects Online Art Foundation. We invite participants to consider the Cultural identity.
What is Cultural Identity?
Cultural identity is the fabric that weaves together the sense of belonging and attachment we feel towards our cultural heritage. It is the collective embodiment of beliefs, customs, traditions, language, values, norms, and practices that distinguish one cultural group from another. Shaped by upbringing, socialization, historical context, geography, religion, ethnicity, and personal experiences, cultural identity is a cornerstone of our self-concept and worldview. It influences behavior, interactions, and provides a sense of continuity and belonging. It’s a dynamic force, ever evolving as we traverse through various cultural landscapes and experiences.

The Sense of
Place is the theme for an international
online artist residency at i.e. Art Projects Online Art Foundation.
We invite participants to consider the
identities of “places,” the ones we walk over and through and live in. Some of
these places are our homes, or locations where we have had formative
experiences that are significant only to us. As the philosopher Edward
Casey wrote in the foreword to his book The Fate of Place:
“To
exist in any way,” “is to be somewhere. Place is as requisite as the air we
breathe, the ground on which we stand, the bodies we have…We are surrounded by
places. We walk over and through them. We live in places, relate to others in
them, die in them.”[1]
This phrase expresses concisely the fundamental significance
of place and the fact that it is through places that we know much of the world.
In general, sense of
place describes our relationship with places, expressed in different dimensions
of human life: emotions, biographies, imagination, stories, and personal
experiences (Basso, 1996).[2] In
environmental psychology, sense of place—how we perceive a place— includes
place attachment and place meaning (Kudryavtsev, Stedman and Krasny, 2012).[3]Place
attachment reflects a bond between people and places, and place
meaning reflects symbolic meanings people ascribe to places. In short,
“sense of place is the lens through which people experience and make meaning of
their experiences in and with place” (Adams, 2013)[4]. Sense
of place varies among people, in history, and over the course of one’s lifetime.
In other words, “a sense of place” advocates
the need to bring ideas of place and into the foreground of thinking and
creating.
This virtual artist residency is an
effort for visual artists with different culture and background to understand,
experience and produce art in this provided virtual place.
Participants should try to produce
works that relate to the notion of “place” as the entry point for artists to
create their own, free association response, creative reaction.
The process and outcomes of this
project will culminate in an online group exhibition at the end of the artist
residency. As a community, we value communication, co-creation, accountability,
experimentation, and safe space to make art. Artists and audiences may not be
together physically but viewing of the process of production and the outcome of
this program in a virtual exhibition can provide a common experience to gain an
understanding of the community and humanity during this provided place of
activities.
Duration:
Duration of this online artist
residency is limited to one month. The residency will start from 10th
April 2023 to 9th May 2023.
Programming:
All invited artists should work in the
field of visual art within the framework of the proposed theme outlined above. Participants
are expected to join the regular meetings online to discuss their work and
progress with the organizers and other invited artists and critics during the
residency. All residents are given an allotted number of days to finalize their
works.
The online group exhibition of this
residency shall take place on: 22nd May 2023.
